This is a collection of dance cards used by Wilson College students at dances from 1905 to 1961.
These little booklets were an important part of formal dances in Europe in the 18th century and included names of the men with whom women wished to dance and during which piece of music. Dance cards eventually made their way from Europe to the US and we have a great selection of dance cards from early dances held at Wilson College. Many were handmade and wrapped in leather or decorated card-stock. They included a small pencil for filling in the card with names and a string to wrap around the dancer’s wrist.
