Description An account of the resource Paul Swain Havens served as president of Wilson College from 1937-1970, leaving a notable impression on the institution and its surrounding community. Born the son of Wilson alumna, as well as an instructor of classical language and former university president, Havens's passion for learning began at a young age. He excelled in primary school, earned a B.A. degree at Princeton University, and attended the University of Oxford as a Rhodes Scholar. Before ascending to Wilson’s presidency at the age of 33, Havens taught courses in English literature and the humanities at Princeton, George Washington University, and Scripps College. President Havens, who was affectionately known to students as “Prexy,” oversaw numerous improvements to Wilson College, entertained prominent visitors to the campus, and advocated for the advancement of women’s education. Along with his wife, Lorraine Hamilton Havens, Paul generously welcomed Wilson students into his household for guidance and help with coursework, and taught a popular class in his living room titled "The Life of the Mind." Postcards became popular at the end of the 19th century when they were called private mailing cards. In 1901, the name changed to postcard. From 1901 until 1907, the back of the card was only used for the address, which is why some older cards in our collection display the sender’s message on the front. The divided back of the card we are familiar with today, became the norm in 1907. Throughout the early postcard days until the beginning of World War I, German printers dominated the market of colorful cards. American printers improved and increased production during WW I, however, to save ink, left a white border which identifies a card as being from the time between 1915 and 1930. After 1930, printers used new processes, which created cards that looked as if printed on linen. These cards were popular until 1945 when Photochrom postcards replaced them. Until 1912, the Scull and Dagger club and the Aloha Club utilized the buildings. After those clubs were no longer in existence, they served as spots for meetings and parties, as well as faculty and later student housing. Both club houses were demolished in the late 1950s. Description An account of the resource The Riding Ring riding club was established after four horses were donated to the College in 1922. At various times, Wilson College has had equestrian teams compete in Eventing, Drill Team, Dressage, Western, and Hunt Seat. The Penn Hall riding facilities were acquired by Wilson in 1973 and Marlys Palmer started an official equitation program. The husband and wife team of Thomas and Martha Shires and Col. Alfred Kitts joined the faculty in 1976. Colonel Kitts talked about the importance of sportsmanship in a speech to the International Equestrian Organization in 1986: “Those of you with whom I have spoken before know my strong feelings about good sportsmanship. One sees it often at events. A student of mine who was tied at the moment for first broke her rein en route to cross country. She had forgotten her spare. The person with whom she was tied volunteered to loan her a rein. She just made it to the starting box for cross country in time.
