Alumnae in Science: Wilson Professors
Professor Jean Allen was awarded four major research grants from the National Science Foundation for her research on cellular differentiation. She was a mentor to dozens of biology majors. Allen was tragically killed in a car accident in 1968. Allen Auditorium is named in her honor.
Professor Dorothy Weeks was the first woman to earn a PhD in mathematics from MIT. She inspired Helen Beard ‘36 and Pauline Morrow ‘38 to pursue PhD’s from MIT. She taught at Wilson from 1934 – 56 except during World War II when she served on the Liaison Office staff of the Office of Scientific Research and Development. She was a Guggenheim Fellow and the recipient of many grants and awards.
