Myths about the immortal Olympic gods and goddesses, together with stories about local, minor deities, sustained the religious life of Greeks and Romans. These myths along with the legendary exploits of heroes and heroines, favorite subjects in ancient art, were portrayed on vases, paintings, and sculpture. Offerings by private individuals were ubiquitous, ranging from life-size statues to miniature votives.
